Black-owned businesses were hit hard by COVID-19 and the ensuing economic fallout.  But Black founders tapped into a well of resilience to forge a path forward. Some pivoted while others doubled down. The result is a renewed sense of purpose and a fresh perspective on building sustainable, marketable businesses.

In celebration of National Black Business Month, Jacqueline Hayes, the Founder & Chief Marketing Strategist of Crayons & Marketers, talks with some of the most remarkable Black-owned business founders about the impact of 2020 on their businesses and how they used innovation and timely marketing strategies to grow and sustain their companies.

In episode 1 of our Black Business Month series, we talk with Netta Dobbins, CEO of Mimconnect.

Who is Netta Dobbins? Glad you asked:

“Passion Produces Perseverance,” says strategist and power connector Netta Dobbins. A values-driven entrepreneur, Netta’s work equips diverse professionals with the support they need to persevere as they, too, pursue their passions.

Her mission is born of personal experience, yet one that too many people of color have in common. After finding herself the only Black person at the table in various corporate settings, Netta decided to create an antidote to such workplace isolation. A natural community builder, she co-founded Mimconnect and grew it into the most engaged digital community and trusted resource hub for multicultural professionals. Mimconnect is an external support network that empowers those in marginalized communities to bring their whole selves to work and has been featured in Ebony, Popsugar, Afrotech, BET, and more.

Prior to founding Mimconnect, the Nashville native moved to New York and launched a successful career in entertainment PR, where she secured press for clients including Clive Davis, PBS, Sony Legacy Artists, Airbnb, and Marvel. She then transitioned to advertising as a strategist with leading cultural marketing agency Translation. There, Netta was tapped to help multimillion-dollar brands like State Farm, Kaiser Permanente, AT&T, Reebok, and NIKE reach diverse audiences. She also created their first Diversity & Inclusion program. She crafted fully immersive campaigns that extended from the digital space to physical activations in order to introduce new products, increase audience engagement, and build brand alignment.

Netta is a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated and holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Middle Tennessee State University. When she’s not building safe spaces for POC to connect and grow, you can find Netta reading a good book, being her authentic self at public speaking engagements, and enjoying oat milk matcha lattes.
